Medical Assistant-Certified to Practical Nursing Option

The Medical Assistant (MA)-Certified to Practical Nursing (PN) option is designed for students who are already certified as Medical Assistants and wish to transition into the Practical Nursing program. This option offers a more streamlined path compared to the traditional LPN program.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Active MA-C License: Applicants must hold an active, unencumbered Medical Assistant-Certified (MA-C) license in Washington State. Proof of licensure must be included with your application.
  • Approved Education Program: Applicants must have graduated from an approved MA-C educational program. Official transcripts must be provided at the time of application.
  • Prerequisite Coursework: All prerequisite courses required for the Practical Nursing program must be completed with a minimum grade of 2.5 or higher in each nursing and supporting course.

Skills Exam for Entry: As part of the MA to LPN pathway, you will be required to pass a skills exam covering the following areas:

  • Handwashing
  • Donning and doffing PPE
  • Restraints
  • IM injection
  • PO medication administration
  • SubQ injection
  • Blood glucose monitoring

On the first day of lab, you will have the opportunity to practice these skills. The following week, you will be checked off on your proficiency. If you successfully pass the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), you will be excused from portions of the lab session. If you do not pass the PLA, you will be registered as a traditional LPN student and must attend all lab sessions.

Required Documents:

  • Active MA-C License: A copy of your active and unencumbered Washington State MA-C license.
  • Transcript: A copy of your transcript showing the conferment of your MA-C degree or certificate.

Application Process:

  • Application Indication: Clearly indicate "MA to PN" at the top of your Practical Nursing application to be considered for this option.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPLA): Students in the MA to PN pathway may receive 2 credits for prior learning (CPLA) by demonstrating proficiency on the skills exam after acceptance into the program.

Upon successful completion, students will have completed the required 90 credits for the Practical Nursing AAS degree, including the 2 credits awarded for prior learning. MA to PN students must meet all prerequisite coursework and application requirements for the Practical Nursing program.
